Qualifying Life Events

Mattamy aims to provide benefits that support you throughout your entire life. This means that at any given time, your benefit needs may look different than they did a few years ago, or than they will be a few years down the line.

One way to approach using your Mattamy benefits is to think about what you’ll need depending on the life stage you’re in and the specific needs you have. You can change or update your benefits during your annual Open Enrollment, or if you experience a Qualifying Life Event (QLE).

Your family just got bigger – congratulations!

Whether you’re welcoming a baby through birth, adoption, or foster care, this is a joyful and transformative time.

It’s also a great moment to take a fresh look at your benefits to make sure they’re aligned with your growing family’s needs.

You might want to:

  • Add your new child to your medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Consider enrolling in or increasing life insurance coverage
  • Open or increase contributions to a dependent care FSA
  • Explore parental leave benefits or short-term disability (for birth parents)

Tying the knot or committing to a partner is a big step – congratulations!

Marriage is a big life change, and a qualifying event to make updates to your benefits.

You might want to:

  • Revisit your health savings or flexible spending account contributions
  • Add your spouse to your benefits (or drop coverage if you’ll be joining theirs)
  • Review and update your beneficiaries
  • Consider life insurance coverage for your spouse

During a time of transition, we’re here to support you.

We understand that personal changes like divorce or separation can be difficult. You may need to update your benefits to reflect your new situation, and we’re here to help make that process as simple as possible.

You might want to:

  • Reconsider dependent care or health savings contributions if your family structure has changed
  • Remove your former spouse/partner from your coverage
  • Update your beneficiaries
  • Review your life and disability insurance needs

Coverage needs can shift unexpectedly – we’re here when they do. If you or a dependent lose or gain coverage outside of our plan (through a spouse’s job, Medicare, or Medicaid) it qualifies you to make changes here too.

You might want to:

  • Enroll in or drop your health plan coverage
  • Add or remove dependents who are affected by the coverage change
  • Adjust your healthcare FSA or HSA contributions based on new needs

Your child is becoming more independent, and they may no longer be eligible for coverage on your health plan.

You might want to:

  • Remove them from your health coverage
  • Share COBRA or alternative coverage options with them

A new job, retirement, or a reduction in hours for you or your spouse can impact your benefits eligibility.

You might want to:

  • Enroll in or drop coverage due to new eligibility
  • Compare plans if moving from part-time to full-time (or vice versa)
  • Reassess your insurance and spending accounts

During a difficult time, your benefits should be the least of your worries.

If a covered spouse, partner, or child passes away, your benefits may need to be updated.

You might want to:

  • Remove the dependent from your coverage
  • Update your beneficiaries
  • Adjust any voluntary insurance policies or spending accounts
